To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Joseph-Guy Ropartz in 2005, the Quatuor Stanislas undertook the world premier recording of the six string quartets composed by this great musician of Breton origin, who had such an important influence on the musical life of Lorraine between 1894 and 1919.
Part of the abundant works of his chamber music, the six string quartets form a vast monument that Ropartz built up over nearly fifty years (the first dates from 1893 and the sixth 1948). Through them it is possible to perfectly understand the stylistic evolution of the composer, from the strong influence of César Franck in the first quartet, down to the refined and less complex style of the latter works.
The quartets n° 2 and 3, dated respectively 1912 and 1925, represent an intermediary stage in the style of Ropartz, who progressively freed himself from the cyclic form present in the 2nd quartet, to attain greater liberty of expression. The slow movements are especially beautiful, even sublime in the case of the second quartet.
